What To Do When We Retire?

We still have a long way to go before retirement. I myself am still jobless and am still trying to find my career path in this country of sausages and beer. Being a chemical engineer and with a little experience working at the beverage industry, perhaps I can try my luck at the various local breweries and beverage companies here.

Many of the good friends that we have met here are like our aunts and uncles or big sisters and brothers. Many of them are already at the retirement age so that we get to ask lots of questions about retirement benefits, pension laws, and their retirement plans. These help my husband and me give an idea on what we want to happen in our future. Surely, we will go back to our home country, the Philippines, when we retire or even before that. While we are here, we need to think of a good way to survive when we too join the "retired force".

We can always venture into a franchise business but we are having second thoughts since both of us don't have any business management backgrounds. We can of course go back to the academe and share the knowledge that we have learned, both from my husband's work experience here doing research and software design and from my graduate studies. Or we can both go into consultancy and become consultants in our own fields of interest. Or we can just travel until our happy feet are too tired to move. The last option will be the best but of course, the most unproductive one. We need to finance these travels, after all.

How about you? Have you ever thought about what you will do when you retire?
