The Christmas / Advent Calendar

When we first moved here in Germany in 2009, the Christmas calendar is among the gift-giving traditions that I look forward to. And it is very interesting to learn along the way how this very romantic idea of a calendar to make waiting for Christmas day to arrive a little bit easier turned out to be a million industry.

Everything started very simply: with pictures and texts. It was in 1903 when most probably the first Advent calendar was designed, by the Munich publisher Gerhard Lang. The calendar was inspired by his mother, who made him a calendar made from 24 cookies when he was still a child. Every day a cookie for the little Gerhard, which made waiting for Christmas day to come a little bit easier.

Even before the published calendar, this counting tradition is already practiced by many German families - for example chalk marks on the wall or the door to count off the days. But then of course, colorful pictures and beautiful texts are more interesting. Lang's calender with the title "Im Lande des Christkinds" (In the Land of the Christ Child) is a kaleidoscope of various motifs of the kinder world. After the premiere in 1903, new versions were published every year. 

Because children love sweet things, the publisher soon had another idea: Christmas / advent calendar with chocolate. It was in 1920 when the first calendar was published, just like the typical calendar we have today: with 24 small doors to open. It was an optimal idea, because people love beautiful surprises. Clubs and parents in other areas then started designing their own calendar.

It was in 1945, after the second world war, when other countries and even the industry found the idea interesting. Famous artists designed calendars - there is the classic with the chocolate and slowly in more and more variants.

Today, there are all sorts of Christmas calendar available in the market - for all ages and for a wide range of products. There are calendars with chips, seasoning, gin, fragrance, make-up tea, coffee, even Lego and Playmobil - there is a calendar to almost every product that one can purchase. It has become a million-business. 

But do we really need all this? I personally love the chocolate bit, one for each day. But with all the products being sold out today, I think it has already lost its essence and meaning. The happiness that opening one door brings has maybe become superficial. Despite the massive commercialization, may we never lost touch of the true meaning of Christmas.

Crafts Day: DIY Photo Frame

My daughter was invited to a birthday party by her twin friends last Friday. Because it was short notice, we didn't have time to go out and buy them gifts. So my daughter decided to make them something instead: a picture frame made made out of paper towel cardboard roll, jute strings and paper. She set out to do it herself without any help from me the day before the party. 

It took her a number of hours but I thought it really turned out great. My only contribution was printing the photo she used in the picture frame and then wrapping the frame in a gift wrap.

So what do you think? It looks like my little Miss is more creative than I am. I guess those days of crafting with her when she was smaller (and I had more time) has really paid off.

Decorate Your Own First Communion Candle

An essential in your child's first communion is the communion candle. It symbolizes Christ, who lights our way and guides us in our journey as Christians. 

For my daughter's first communion candle, we decided to decorate it ourselves. We found a colorful design on the internet which suited our daughter's personality and used it as our reference. 

In decorating the communion candle, it is important to keep the following in mind:

1. Leave at least 13-15 cm space on the top so that the decoration will not immediately melt away while the candle burns. Also allow a 15 cm distance from the bottom so that your child will be able to hold the candle easily without covering the decoration while handling the candle.

2. Signs of the eucharist and Christ such as the chalice, the host, grape vine, fish, alpha and omega, sun, cross, etc. are just some of the symbols relevant to first communion. Explain to your child what each symbol means and allow them to choose the symbols that they want on their candle.

3. Materials: you will need candle (we used 35mm x 500 mm, with 10% beeswax), wax sheets in various colours, crafter's scalpel, cutting mat, templates for the symbols, wax paper.

3. Don't forget to also place your child's name and the date of the first communion so you will always be reminded when your child first received the body and blood of Christ.

4. Have fun decorating. This is also another chance to spend quality time with your child and sharing with them your faith.

DIY Baptism Favors

We welcomed another beautiful angel into the Christian family last November. As a little token for the guests of my godson who came to witness his baptism, I made these little glass jars filled with chocolate kisses. I found this great idea featured on Pinterest and proceeded to make something similar to it. Instead of the candles, I put in Hershey's kisses. Yum! :)

The materials are readily available in any craft shop or paper supplies store. The small glass jars (Mini Einmachgläser mit Deckel in German) and Hershey's kisses Cookies and Cream and Milk Chocolate, I bought online (via Amazon) because they are cheaper.

My ever so helpful little girl was also very happy to do her part in cutting, gluing and putting things together. Unfortunately, I lost the photos I made to document how to make these baptism favors on my old Samsung when it went kaputt last month so I only have this single photo of our crafts day. :(

Bunny Softy from Socks

Each week, me and my not so little girl try to do crafts together. This is my way of bonding and spending quality time with her and an avenue for her to develop her creativity. Since we went away for the weekend during the Easter holidays, we opted to make something with an Easter theme when we got back. My daughter so loves everything cuddly and soft to the touch and I found this very great idea on Pinterest on making use of old baby socks to make bunnies out of them. So we rummaged through her closet and luckily found a few pairs that were already too small for her.

And this is what we came up with:

I did most of the sewing since it needs fine stitching. My daughter did the filling and drew on the cheeks. 

Ain't she cute? This also makes a nice gift for babies but be sure to use brand new socks. :)

Crafts Day: Colorful & Soft Felt Owls

So my daughter's girl friend came last weekend for a pyjama party. The girls were pretty excited to spend the night together since it has been a while since they last saw each other. We decided to do crafts in the evening and made felt owl softies. It was a good thing that we had a fresh supply of craft felt. We searched through the internet and found a pattern which I modified to suit the girls' taste.

It was pretty simple and easy to do. For the materials, you would need craft felt in various colors, a pair of scissors, board paper for the pattern, thread and needle, some cotton for the filling. We printed out the pattern and then I modified some of the parts, traced it on the board paper and cut it. I let the girls choose the colors for their owls and then cut the owl pieces accordingly. I just placed the board paper on the craft felt and cut my way through following the edges since the pattern is pretty small.

Then it was time for the girls to do the sewing in between watching the cartoon series Winx. I had to show them first how to do it and then they sewed up the parts together. The difficult and small parts like the eyes and beak, I volunteered to sew on for them. 

The owls were so cute and sweet and soft! And the girls loved it! They named both owls Meggie. Aren't they adorable? Try making this simple craft with your children too! They will definitely love it and it also helps develop their fine motor skills too!

P.S. Since Christmas is coming this could also be a good custom gift idea for your loved ones. Instead of owls, you can make other animal figures or Christmas symbols to give to your loved ones. It also makes a good idea for a customized Christmas tree decor. You can use high quality felt so they don't fuzz too much.

Birthday Gift Ideas

My daughter just celebrated her birthday. Next in line in the family who will turn a year older will be and then my husband. Hubby and the little girl surprised me with a tablet last Christmas so I guess it is time for me and the little girl to do the surprising for the husband's day. He has lots of interests lately, mostly involving the great outdoors. He enjoys swimming, rock climbing, hiking and snowboarding. He spends a lot of time outdoors as it allows him to let off steam and clear his mind after a hard week at work. Whenever he is out, he has the tendency to be engrossed in the moment he sometimes forgets about the time.

Perhaps a sports watch will help him to keep track of the time. I've began looking into all sorts of sports watches, including the TAG Heuer FORMULA 1, which I think really looks nice. It is not so bold looking but at the same time very sporty. This will just suit his personality. Having a watch will help him manage his time better and will help him to plan on his steps.

He could also use some gadgets that I think will be very helpful when he out. A GPS tracker to help him navigate his way in the mountains, a power bank to keep his smartphone running, and some backpacking gears.

So What's On Your Christmas List?

It is almost Christmas... I know because aside from the cold, I can already see photos of Christmas decors and the tree being put up that my friends have uploaded on the social network. I am too busy writing my thesis though so that I haven't even started my list yet. Hopefully, I will be done and over with it before the month ends so I can have time to clear my head and take care of other important stuff.

I have lots of nephews and nieces both on my side and my husband's side of the family and we are thinking of giving something unique to them. As to what that is, I still have no idea! But now that I am thinking about it and since most of them are nephews, maybe we can buy some soccer uniforms for them? Then we can have one team! Hehe... But who will be the coach? I guess if it's going to be a team, we would also need to find a coach and consider buying some coach gifts too... A set of uniforms for a kids' soccer team... That will really be bringing a piece of Germany with us back home! A good idea isn't it? Yes, I am now considering that....

We'll be Home for Christmas

It's already the -BER months and for most of us, it means that Christmas is just around the corner! This Christmas will be more exciting for the three of us because it will be our first Christmas in the Philippines. It has been more than three years since we visited our homeland and going home during this season is just the perfect time to come home!

Oh, there will be lots of things to prepare before our trip since me and my little girl are staying behind a little bit longer. I am giddy with excitement though! I guess I miss the way we Filipinos celebrate Christmas and how we always celebrate it with the family. What I miss about celebrating Christmas in the Philippines was the gift-giving. How those who have more to share willingly give to those who have less. It is indeed a good reason to shower our loved ones with gifts of love.

I haven't started my Christmas list yet but I could include sterling silver jewelry for the cousins. And my nephew has been asking for a gadget. I wonder if I should buy him one... And what of my siblings and parents and nephews and nieces and the entire clan? I don't know what I should give them but just thinking about being able to share the blessings we received is more than enough to give a smile on my face.

Yup, being home for Christmas this year is a well-earned gift indeed!
