The Family Man

I recently watched the film The Family Man on local television. Now that's another movie off my list! It is a 2000 comedy drama film starring Nicolas Cage and Téa Leoni. Although featured in German, I was able to grasp some of the conversations through the guidance of my husband who has previously seen it.

So what's the movie all about? It is about Jack Campbell, a single wealthy Wall Street businessman who has everything he has or so he thinks. Two days before Christmas, he receives a call from his ex-girlfriend Kate. The next day, he wakes up to find himself in an alternate universe and in a totally different situation: he is married to his college girlfriend Kate in a 12-year marriage, he has two kids, he lives in Jersey, and he works as a tire salesman in Big Ed's. The first day was a nightmare for him and he was desperate to have his life back. But as he gets more comfortable with his new life day by day, he realizes something that he has been missing all his life.

But everything happened just to give him a glimpse of what his life might be like if he hadn't left for London in the first place. On Christmas Day, he wakes up to find himself back in his old life and in his empty penthouse. He forgoes the closing of a multi-million pharmaceutical acquisition deal to catch Kate, who is a very wealthy lawyer. He finds her moving out of her townhouse, busy supervising the movers because she is moving to her new office in Paris. On the day of her flight to Paris, Jack chases after her at the airport and desperate to make her stay, describes the family that they have in the alternate universe. Intrigued with what he said, she agrees to have a cup of coffee with him at the airport.

Indeed, money cannot buy everything! True happiness springs from two people finding a connection and trying to make things work.
