TCP#2: Lorenzo's Oil

Welcome to the 2nd edition of Tuesday Couch Potatoes, where we post about a movie each week. Today's theme is all about your favorite husband and wife movie.

I would like to feature the 1992 movie Lorenzo's Oil starring Nick Nolte and Susan Sarandon. It based on the story of Augusto and Michaela, who are on a frantic search to find a cure for the their son's rare disease ALD.

Here's a plot of the movie:
Failing to find a doctor capable of treating their young son Lorenzo's rare disease, Augusto and Michaela Odone sought their own cure. They set out on a mission to find a treatment to save their child. In their quest, the Odones clashed with doctors, scientists, and support groups, who were skeptical that anything could be done about ALD, much less by laypeople. But they persisted, setting up camp in medical libraries, reviewing animal experiments, badgering researchers, questioning top doctors all over the world, and even organizing an international symposium about the disease. Despite dead ends of research, the horror of watching their son's health decline, and being surrounded by skeptics (including the coordinators of the support group they attended), they persisted until they finally hit upon a therapy involving adding a certain kind of oil (actually olive oil with two specific long chain fatty acids removed) to their son's diet. They contacted over 100 firms around the world until they found an elderly British chemist working for Croda International who was willing to take on the challenge of distilling the proper formula. -Source-
The story shows us what parental love can do. It is willing to move mountains if needed just to save lives. I am amazed at how Augusto and Michaela persisted in their quest. It is not only a quest to find the cure, but a quest on how far they could go in their marriage. The challenge that they faced as husband and wife proved to be difficult too... but they conquered all odds. All because of LOVE, that selfless, unconditional love. A bittersweet film, and with great performances from Nolte and Sarandon, it is indeed impossible not to be moved by this film.

Here's a theatrical trailer of the movie:

Next week, we will feature a 3D animated sci-fi movie. Hope to see you all again next week!

About Lorenzo's Oil - it's magnificent. I am amazed by the parents' devotion to their son and how husband and wife stuck together during Lorenzo's illness.

Susan Sarandon portrayed the concept: a mother's fierce love for her son, very well.

Good pick.

Hi Kikamz, thanks for adding my link. I wouldn't have been able to sort it out even last nite after work because I had internet problems. I'm in the midst of a boring faculty meeting right now, secretly typing away sssshhhh...lol... that's the wonder of multi-tasking. I hope this connection here was faster so I can leave comments on other participants' entries, but our network deliberately drags all net stuff unrelated with work. So I have to put up with this turtle for the time being.

This meme is fun really. I look forward to more weeks of participating.
