Studio Ghibli Films Coming Soon on Netflix

There is now another to keep your Netflix subscription. If you love Totoro, Kiki, Princess Mononoke, among other unforgettable, kawai and loveable Ghibli characters, rejoice! Because they are coming soon on Netflix! Yay!!!!

My daughter loves Anime... She was disappointed when Netflix stopped showing the Pokemon series. Maybe it has something to do with airing rights and licenses. But anway, we are so happy that Ghibli films are coming soon on Netflix... On the 1st of February to be exact.

The films will be released one after another beginning Feb. 1st. The first seven films available in February are the following:

The Hunt Continues...

I am no fanatic but I do like to watch Nicolas Cage films... I especially like the action-adventure mystery series: National Treasure, which is about uncovering hidden troves and secrets from America's past. In the movie, I remember masonry appearing very prominently, with one of the Masons wearing a ring, to prove he is one. I wonder if it was one of those tungsten masonic rings he was wearing...

I like the film for its mystery and like most mystery movies, the National Treasure is more of a fantasy movie than something based on facts. The direction by Jerry Bruckheimer was superd and I enjoyed the acting of Nicolas Cage as he played the role of Benjamin Franklin Gates. It was a success because it is one of those family adventure films that the entire family can appreciate although there are still some PG scenes.

Watch out for the National Treasure 3, which is reported by IMdB to be released in 2013. Hmmm... another movie to watch coming our way soon.....

Who Is Maleficent?

We all love fairy tales but we do not really care so much about the antagonists... Being as they are, fairy tales are well, fairy tales. We don't really know much about the Big Bad Wolf or the Bad Witch or the cruel Stepmother but that they are BAD.

Now there is one film that tells the story of the antagonists. If you know the classic story of Princess Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty, you will know Maleficent, the wicked witch who placees the princess under an enchantment as her gift: the princess will prick her hand on a spindle and die.

The film will be called MALEFICENT and tells the unknown story of the wicked witch. Angelina Jolie plays Maleficent, along with other distinguished cast. The film is set to be officially released in March 14, 2014, and will be distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. Filming began last week and is reportedly taking place in the Buckinghamshire countryside.

TCP#105: Save The Last Dance

It's a miracle that TCP is up today! Lol! I know I have been remiss in posting the last few weeks. I was thinking of "killing" TCP altogether but I guess I just cannot drag myself away from blogging just like that. And so I want to start where I left off with the theme "Groovy Kind of Movie". Who doesn't love a movie that has good music and will want you to shake your booty?

My pick for this week's theme is Save The Last Dance, a 2001 romantic drama dance film featuring Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas. It was interesting to see classical ballet mixed with hip hop moves at the end of the film when Sara had to perform in front of the Juilliard screening committee for her audition. It's an inspiring movie that shows us that our dreams can come true if we work hard for them. With discipline, diligence, good influence from friends and creativity, it is not that hard to achieve our dreams.

And indeed, "The Only Person You Need To Be Is Yourself."

TCP#104: Dante's Peak

Uh-oh! I am in big trouble for posting TCP soooo late today! I am awfully sorry my dears... This blogger is just so busy reviewing for her final exams. Would anyone of you like to be the guest Coucher for next week's TCP? I have my examinations scheduled the entire month of September and I wonder if there is someone willing to make guest the TCP posts in the coming Tuesdays of September. Just let me know if you are up for it.

Anyway, without further ado, here's my pick for this week's theme Disaster Strikes. It is no other than the film "Dante's Peak", a 1997 disaster film which stars 007 Agent Pierce Brosnan, Linda Hamilton and Charles Hallalan. Brosnan plays the role of a scientist, Dr. Harry Dalton, who was tasked to invertigate possible volcanic activities in the Cascade Mountains which has not erupted for 7000 years, and is located near a town called Dante's Peak. Dante's Peak has just been awarded the "second most desirable city to live in" and is celebrating it's annual Pioneer Days Festival when a strange thing began to take place: two backpackers were spotted floating in the hot spring due to very high temperature. What's more is that after two weeks of evaluating the mountain and finding no results of an imminent eruption, other strange things began occuring such as the water from the tap having a burnt orange due to sulfur dioxide seeping into the town's water supply. Seismic activities followed after that and it was almost too late to evacuate the town's people. Indeed you can sometimes never tell with mother nature, despite the technical equipment that you have to predict it's activity. A dormant volcano is even more dangerous after it has not erupted for thousands of years.

I picked this movie because it is reminiscent of the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991 which took hundreds of Filipino lives due to the raging lahar that swept villages living near the Zambales Mountain Ranges in Luzon. The pressure was definitely on the volcanologists of PHIVOLCS at that time since they needed to issue an evacuation warning and convince the residents to evacuate due to the severity of the threat but I guess it became way too late for some. I just hope that this natural catastrophe won't happen again and that there will be a more accurate and better disaster-preparedness plan for events such as these.

TCP#103: Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties

Hello Couchers! Welcome to the late edition of Tuesday Couch Potatoes where we blog about a movie each week. Life's A Comic. That is what some people say and that is our theme for this week's TCP as we feature movies that are based on comics...

A case of mistaken identity... That is what this film is all about. Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties is a 2006 film that also carries the following titles: Garfield 2: The Prince and The Paw-per in the UK, Garfield: The Movie 2. It is a sequel to the 2004 Garfield Movie whose storyline is based on Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper and its title alludes to Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities.

I have always enjoyed this fat cat's dark humor and this time around, he brings us to London with him and to the world of English regals. Prince, the cat who looks exactly like Garfield just inherited a castle and their passed crossed somewhere in the streets of London and their roles were switched. What happens after that is an experience both cats will never forget.

TCP#102: Lost In Space

Hello Couchers! It's time again for another edition of Tuesday Couch Potatoes where we feature one of our favorite movies each week. Last week, we went to New York when we featured movies "Set in New York." This Tuesday, we will be exploring outer space with our movie theme "Spaced Out." Are you ready for some space adventure then?

My pick this Tuesday is Lost In Space, a 1998 science fiction film about the family Robinson who is on a mission to create a Hyper-Gate in orbit around Alpha Prime, the human race's new home. Their mission was sabotaged and when they had to go on Hyper-Drive or else be pulled by the sun, found themselves lost in space. This movie really left me all hanging as it ended right as the Robinsons and West activate the Hyperdrive. Did they really reach Alpha Prime? I was rooting for a part two but there was no news of it. Although it did make it to the Box Office and it was indeed an interesting movie, I thought that the acting was not really that noteworthy or spectacular.

TCP#101: Kate and Leopold

Wow! I can't believe we are now on the 101st edition of Tuesday Couch Potatoes! We have come this far haven't we? Thank you my loyal Couchers for being with all this time. My giveaway has also almost come to an end and I can't wait to draw the winners tomorrow. Please watch out for the announcement of winners on Wednesday okay?

Are you ready for another movie feature this week? Our theme is Set in New York. If you fell in a movie that has been set in New York, regardless of whether it is a classic or newly released, then come share it with us!

My pick: Kate and Leopold. This romantic-comedy fantasy movie stars Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman and is about "a duke who travels through time from New York 1876 and travels to the present and falls in love with a career woman in the modern New York." (Wikipedia)

This is one of those love stories that would leave you wishing you had your own duke who traveled through time and you both lived happily ever after. I can dream on right? But like most movies, it does not really happen in real life.

Another thing to love about this movie? The OST "Until", written and performed by Sting. You have to watch this vid from YouTube to know what I mean. It really wrapped up the movie for me!

TCP#100: Finding Neverland

Hello Couchers! Finally, we are on the 100th edition of Tuesday Couch Potatoes! I hope that it was fun for you all as it was fun for me. Since we are on the 100th post, our theme for this week will be: Famous! If you know of a good film about a famous person, then come share it with us this Tuesday.

My pick for this week: Finding Neverland. It is an interesting film as it is about how James Barrie came to create Peter Pan and Neverland, inspired by his neighbors, the Davies brothers, who lost their father. Set in pre-WWII London in the year 1940, it showed the struggles of James Barrie to bring Peter Pan to the stage for the very first time. The musical turned out to be a success in the end. In the film, James Barrie also found himself becoming a surrogate father to the orphaned Davies brothers.

With a star-studded cast composed of Johnny Depp as James Barrie, Kate Winslet as the boys mother Sylvia Davies, Radha Mitchell as Barrie's wife Mary Ansell Barrie, Dustin Hoffman as producer Charles Frohman, and Julie Christie as the boys' grandmother Emma du Maurier. This movie is magical and suitable for the entire family. Just goes to show that in every one of us is a child.

TCP#99: The Blair Witch Project

It's Tuesday once again and it's time for another edition of Tuesday Couch Potatoes, a movie meme where we blog about our favorite movies each week. We are now on our 99th edition and the countdown continues as we look forward to our 100th post and of course, to our winners for the Own It On Blu-Ray and DVD Giveaway. Have you joined yet? Now on to our theme for this week: Witchcraft. Don't we all love the mystery and the magic that surrounds it? My pick for this week will of course be "Blair Witch Project". Here's a brief summary from The Internet Movie Database: Heather Donahue, Michael Williams and Joshua Leonard, student filmmakers, set out to shoot a documentary about a local legend, the Blair Witch. In the forests near Burkittsville, Maryland, many children have vanished in the 1940s and people still avoid going too deep into the woods. So, the party sets out to look for facts that prove the legend, equipped only with two cameras and a little hiking gear. First, they find little piles of stone that must have been arranged artificially, later, they have to admit to be lost in the woods. Eerie sounds at night and more piles of stones in places where they have not been before cause the already desperate group to panic. And one night, days after they should have been back home, Josh disappears completely. This movie really got into me... It kept me up all night as I couldn't shake the imagery off my mind. And I was really fooled because it was not a real documentary. We were made to think that it was but it isn't. I gues this is one of those movies who really made it big and when I say big, I mean really huge profits. The film's budget was slotted to be between $500,000 and $750,000 and it grossed $248,639,099 worldwide. Well you can say that the movie was a success. And if you are not faint-hearted, I would recommend this one.

Oopps! I did it again! I am late again for my entry... Apologies my dears! I honestly could not blog because I had to work with my team in our Design for a Wastewater Treatment Plant task. TCP#97: The Mighty Ducks

Hello Couchers! Welcome to the 97th edition of Tuesday Couch Potatoes where we post about our favorite movie each week. Apologies for my late TCP entry. I was in pain yesterday due to a terrible toothache but I am feeling better now. This week we go sporty and active as we feature films about sports, with the theme "It's All About the Game". We are competitive in nature and we do enjoy a good sports film once in a while.

So, without further ado, here's my pick: The Mighty Ducks. I was still in my grade school years when this came out in 1992 and seriously, I enjoyed this movie when I got to see it in my teenage years on TV. I remember even having a crush on Joshua Jackson, one of the players of the Ducks team, who is of course more popularly known as Pacey Withers of Dawsons's Creek if you are one of those who grew up in my time. This movie shows that we all have our potentials and if we believe in ourselves, we can achieve the things that we want to achieve. It also teaches us what teamwork is all about.

TCP#96: Kung Fu Panda

Hello Couchers! Welcome to the 96th edition of Tuesday Couch Potatoes where we blog about a movie each week. This Tuesday's theme: Action Comedy Movies. Oh yes, it is time we share some movies that make us laugh out loud while we sit on the edge of our seats. There's a wealth of action comedy movies out there so I hope you will share them with me so that I too will have a good laugh. My exams are in two months and this type of movie will just be the perfect stress-reliever.

Guess what my pick for this week is? Yes, it's a children's movie entitled Kung Fu Panda. I know most of you have already seen the first movie which came out in 2008. But have you seen Kung Fu Panda II yet? It was shown here last 16th of June and it is still showing at Corso Kino, a cinema that airs Hollywood films in original english version. I wish I get to see it on big screen as it will be in cinemas until the weekend. I was able to watch it though but it's a cam version, thanks to a Pinoy website that my husband found. And it was so hilarious, I kept laughing and laughing. And with all the kung fu moves, you surely get more than enough action. It's got a good moral to teach too.

So what's the part 2 about? Here's the story: "Po is now living his dream as The Dragon Warrior, protecting the Valley of Peace alongside his friends and fellow kung fu masters, The Furious Five – Tigress, Crane, Mantis, Viper and Monkey. But Po’s new life of awesomeness is threatened by the emergence of a formidable villain, who plans to use a secret, unstoppable weapon to conquer China and destroy kung fu. It is up to Po and The Furious Five to journey across China to face this threat and vanquish it. But how can Po stop a weapon that can stop kung fu? TCP#95: Robin Hood

Hello Couchers! Welcome to the 95th edition of Tuesday Couch Potatoes where we post about a movie each week. Finally, the sun is out and it is a good day to go and watch a good movie at the cinemas but since I cannot, I might as well blog about a movie that I recently watched that has something to do with our theme for this week: Outlawed.

We all know the story of Robin Hood, the legendary prince of thieves. So many films and animation, and even a TV series made sure of that. But do you know how Robin Hood came to live in the Sherwood Forest and in hiding? The 2010 British/American film adaption tells of the events in Robin Logstride's life as an ordinary archer down to when he was outlawed by King John because the king saw Robin as a threat to his power. With a delightful cast, good direction, and a witty script, you will definitely enjoy this movie.

TCP#94: The Golden Compass

Hello Couchers! Welcome to the 94th edition of Tuesday Couch Potatoes where we post about a movie each week. Our theme for this Tuesday is "A Nicole Kidman Movie". Whoever doesn't love to watch this talented American -  Australian beauty? I know I do. I have seen many of her films, award-winning or not. She is just one of those actresses who can play her role very effectively, whether it is a drama, romantic comedy, or adventure film.

My pick for this theme is the 2007 fantasy-adventure film "The Golden Compass", where Kidman plays the role of Marisa Coulter or more often refered to as Mrs. Coulter and is described as "beautiful and young", with blond hair that framed her cheeks. The movie is set in a world where a person's soul resides outside their body in an animal-like form called a Dæmon. Kidman's Dæmon is in the form of a golden monkey with long fur. This is an interesting movie to watch to watch for children and adults alike because it takes you to a whole new different world. You also have to watch out for the polar bear! He is just so adorable! :D

TCP#93: Maid In Manhattan

Hello Couchers! Welcome to the June 14th edition of Tuesday Couch Potatoes. My apologies if there was no TCP last Tuesday. I just didn't manage to blog even a single entry last week. Christopher Marshall (Fiennes) thinks Marissa Ventura (Lopez) is a socialite when she was mistakenly washe saw This is a fun and sweet movie to watch, which leaves you feeling happy and good about life after watching it. You'll also learn something from this film and if you want to know what it is, you'll just have to watch it yourself.
