Daily Habits That May Help Reduce the Risk of Squamous Cell Skin Cancer

Key Takeaways
  • Squamous cell skin cancer is one of the most common types of skin cancer.
  • Adopting certain daily habits can help reduce the risk of developing this type of cancer.
  • Protection from UV radiation, regular skin checks, and a healthy diet are critical components of skin cancer prevention.

Table of Contents

  1. Importance of Protection from UV Radiation
  2. Regular Skin Checks
  3. Hydration and Skin Health
  4. Proper Skincare Routine
  5. Avoiding Tobacco Products

Squamous cell skin cancer Memphis is one of the most common types of skin cancer, arising from the abnormal growth of squamous cells in the outermost layer of the skin. Though it can affect other body regions, it usually appears on the face, ears, neck, and hands—areas that are exposed to the sun. While often treatable if detected early, squamous cell carcinoma can metastasize to other body parts if left untreated, emphasizing the importance of regular skin checks and sun protection measures.

Importance of Protection from UV Radiation

One of the major risk factors for developing squamous cell skin cancer is exposure to UV radiation from the sun. Effective ways to reduce your risk include protecting your skin with high-SPF sunscreen, finding shade during the hottest parts of the day, and using protective gear like long sleeves and hats. Studies indicate that prolonged exposure to UV radiation can accelerate skin aging and increase the likelihood of skin cancer.

It is imperative to acknowledge the existence of additional UV radiation sources, such as tanning beds, which provide a substantial risk. The Skin Cancer Foundation highlights that indoor tanning devices can emit UVA and UVB radiation, both of which can cause serious skin damage and potentially lead to cancer.

Regular Skin Checks

Early detection is key to effectively treating squamous cell skin cancer. Frequent self-examinations might assist you in spotting any skin changes early on. Check for new growths, changes in existing moles or spots, and lesions that bleed or don't heal. If you notice any concerning changes, it's crucial to consult a dermatologist promptly. Regular check-ups with a skin specialist can also assist in detecting skin cancer at its earliest stages, making treatment more effective.

How to Perform a Self-Examination

  1. Examine your complete body, front and back, using a full-length mirror. Make sure to check areas that are often overlooked, such as under your breasts, on the soles of your feet, and between your toes.
  2. Check your forearms, underarms, and palms of your hands. With your elbows bent, examine your arms' upper and lower regions closely.
  3. Sit down to examine the bottoms of your feet and the back of your legs. Use a hand mirror if needed to inspect these hard-to-see areas.
  4. Use a hand mirror to inspect your neck, scalp, back, and buttocks. You may need assistance from a friend or family member to check your scalp thoroughly.

Regular self-examinations not only increase the likelihood of early detection but also make you more aware of the usual patterns and marks on your skin so that any abnormal changes can be spotted quickly.

Hydration and Skin Health

Maintaining healthy skin requires drinking enough water. Drinking water keeps the skin moisturized, full, and more resistant to injury from the environment. Additionally, it helps the body rid itself of pollutants, which lightens the burden on your skin. Conversely, dehydration might increase your skin's vulnerability to wrinkles, dryness, and other issues.

Make it a point to consume eight 8-ounce glasses of water or more if you live in a hot region or are an active person each day. Consuming foods high in water, such as oranges, watermelon, and cucumbers, can also help you meet your daily hydration requirements. For some who find plain old water boring, herbal teas might also be a great substitute.

Proper Skincare Routine

The health of your skin can be greatly improved by implementing a regular skincare regimen that involves washing, hydrating, and protecting it. Select skin-type-appropriate products; stay away from harsh chemicals that may irritate or harm your skin over time. A good skincare routine can act as a first line of defense against environmental damage and help maintain the skin's natural barrier.

Basic Skincare Steps

  • Cleansing: To get rid of makeup, oil, and grime without depriving your skin of its natural oils, use a mild cleanser. Cleansing helps to keep pores clear and prevent infections, which can lead to skin problems.
  • Moisturizing: To keep your skin hydrated and fortify its protective layer, use a moisturizer that is appropriate for your skin type. Moisturizers can also help to soothe and repair damaged skin, reducing the risk of inflammation and irritation.
  • Protection: Even on overcast days, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day to shield your skin from damaging UV radiation. Sunscreen is crucial for avoiding sunburn right away, as well as long-term skin damage that can result in cancer.

Consistency is key in a skincare routine. Regularly following these steps can help maintain your skin's natural health and resilience, better preparing it to prevent potential damage and diseases.

Avoiding Tobacco Products

Smoking and the use of other tobacco products are known to increase the risk of various types of cancers, including squamous cell skin cancer. Tobacco contains dangerous substances that can injure your skin and increase its vulnerability to malignant changes. Tobacco also accelerates the skin's aging process, leading to wrinkles and a sallow complexion.

Giving up smoking enhances your general health in addition to lowering your chance of skin cancer. Better skin tone and a lower chance of developing additional health issues are two advantages of quitting that are practically instantaneous. Resources like the American Cancer Society provide valuable tips and support for those looking to quit. From counseling to nicotine replacement therapies, there are various tools available to help you become tobacco-free.

What Are the Different Types of Food Poisoning?

Food poisoning is something of a misnomer. It is more accurate to refer to it as food-borne illness. It usually happens by accident because of pathogens in the food. When you eat the food, the micro-organism gets into your system and causes an infection.

Pathogens get into your food in different ways. Sometimes the food is exposed to contaminated water. Sometimes the person preparing the food doesn't wash their hands before handling it, allowing the food to become contaminated with fecal matter. Sometimes the pathogens are already present in the food and can make you sick if it is undercooked or stored without adequate chiller service Austin TX. In any case, there are three main types of pathogens that can cause food-borne illness.

Viruses
Not all pathogenic viruses can cause disease if they get in your food. However, certain viruses already present in food can cause disease. An example is hepatitis A, which causes disease of the liver. Norovirus is a fairly common, highly contagious, and occasionally fatal food-borne pathogen that sickens approximately 19 million people annually. Other, less common food-borne viruses include astrovirus and rotavirus.

Bacteria
Most food-borne illnesses are caused by bacteria. These microscopic organisms are present throughout the environment. Many are harmless and some are beneficial, but others can cause disease. Some of the most common culprits behind food-borne bacterial infection are salmonella and E. coli. Cooking the food typically kills the bacteria, but cross-contamination of preparing other foods alongside raw meat can spread bacterial infection.

Parasites
A parasite is a creature that lives off a host organism for as long as possible. In the case of food-borne illness, parasites usually take up residence in the digestive tract. Parasitic infection is not as common a cause of food-borne illness as a bacterial infection, and some people are not aware of it because they show no symptoms. However, other people can have serious complications from parasitic infections, especially pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.

Food poisoning typically causes gastrointestinal complaints as well as headaches and weakness. You should see a doctor immediately for dehydration and other severe symptoms.

4 Simple Ways to Keep Your House Germ Free During the Pandemic

COVID-19 has caused nearly everyone to spend much more time at home than usual, and this means that your home is likely dirtier and more full of germs than ever before. If you are worried about the germs in your home multiplying, here are 4 simple things that you can do right now to keep your house virus free.

Wash Sheets at Least Once a WeekYou spend a great majority of your time at home in your bedroom, so it is essential that you keep items like sheets as clean as possible. Wash your sheets and bedding at least once a week to keep germs at bay. Once you have run your sheets through a wash cycle, dry them on high heat to kill any viruses that are lingering.

Deep Clean Your Carpets
Simply vacuuming your carpets occasionally is not enough. Hire a service to perform deep Carpet Cleaning Denver to steam out germs and grime that is lurking below the carpet's surface. This is especially important to do if people wear shoes in your home, since shoes are carriers of all different types of dirt that could make you ill.

Disinfect Phones and Other AppliancesYour cell phone is 10 times dirtier than a toilet seat, according to Time Magazine. Consider how often you touch your phone and other appliances in your home, such as computers, cooking appliances, and even light switches. Though cleaning supplies are in short supply and are tough to find right now, do what you can to sanitize things that you touch frequently so that germs are not inadvertently spread to others. Also be sure to disinfect any high-traffic areas in your home daily, such as kitchen counters and desks.

Store Your Toothbrush SafelyIt is easy to get into the routine of simply leaving your toothbrush on the bathroom vanity when you are finished brushing your teeth, but this is a breeding ground for germs. Instead, place your toothbrush upright in a toothbrush holder so that the bristles are not making contact with any surface that could be dirty. If you do not have a toothbrush holder, at least put it in a drawer so it is not sitting on a counter and susceptible to infection.

Keeping your home germ free while quarantined may seem daunting, but it is possible. Ensure that you are cleaning as often as you can and you won't have to worry about viruses invading your space.

Of Pregnancy and Swollen Feet

It is very common for pregnant women to have edema, water storage in the body which is characterized by swollen feet, swollen hands and even face. This  especially in the third semester of pregnancy. It is unpleasant most of the time, because it is difficult to put on your favorite shoes let alone fit into them and walking can also be difficult. The swelling is worst at the end of the day, after long periods of standing or stitting, especially on warm days. Sometimes you also feel a tightening and prickling of the underarms and hands, even the rings on your fingers become very tight. The swelling could also bring about pain and cramps in the night, which happens to me every now and then.

So what can you do to ease the swelling and discomfort?

1. Wear medical compression stockings / socks. This is very effective in reducing the swelling and should be worn at the beginning of the day, right after you take a shower. Through the compression stocking, the blood circulation is controlled and helps to avoid heavy legs. Most compression stockings are made to order so that you get the correct measurements. And because the swelling on both legs are not the same, having them made to order ensures that each leg is getting the right compression.

2. Raise your legs every now and then. If you sit or stand for the most part of the day, raising your legs every now and then will allow for a better circulation and allows your feet to relax. Be sure to find a comfortable position though especially if you are in the later stage of your pregnancy.

3. Soak your feet in lukewarm water. A good foot soak in lukewarm water with Dead Sea salt in it also helps ease swelling. Be sure that the waster reaches up to your calves. The lukewarm water helps in circulation.

4. Massage your feet with the help of lavender cypress oil. This has a cooling effect and should be done right after your foot soak. Massage your feet first and work your way up to the ankles, calves, knees and thighs. The cooling effect helps to reduce the flow of blood down to your feet.

5. Eat a good balanced diet. A good balanced diet that is by no means low in salt has a positive influence on the course of the pregnancy and can, in many cases, prevent or alleviate edema.

6. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Drink at least 2 liters of water per day. Proper hydration is important. It is also not advisable to restrict your salt intake unless your doctor advised it. The common notion that you should drink less and avoid salt in your diet when you have edema is medically outdated, because this does not help and can even worsen the problem.

7. Pay attention to regular exercise. Recommended for pregnant women are walks and swimming. Staying in the water is helpful because the hydrostatic pressure of the water can push back the edema.

8. Taking alternating showers or baths. Alternating showers or baths, combined with a subsequent brush massage using a soft massage brush or a massage glove, stimulate the blood circulation and thus the transport of fluids in the body.

9. Cucumber face mask for your swelling face. If your face is swollen during pregnancy, this can be taken cared of with a cooling cucumber mask. On cleansed face, simply lay thinly sliced cucumbers or you can puree the cucumber and mix it with low-fat curd cheese and apply.

These are just some of the tips that can help ease or reduce edema during pregnancy. Do you have other tips? Then do share in the comments below and I will update the list.

Have a healthy and safe pregnancy!

My Pregnancy And Some of Its Complications

So I am now in my 26th week of pregnancy and my belly has bubbled as I have swallowed an entire watermelon! I am feeling the joys of my baby's kicks, sommersaults and punches. Oh yes, this baby moves a lot!

I had two check-ups this week: one for the special organ malfunction screening at a specialist since I belong to the high-risk pregnancy group and the routine prenatal check-up at my OB-Gyne.

During the special organ malfunction screening, a fine ultrasound screening was done to check if everything about the baby is okay. They would look at all the organs especially the vital ones: heart, brain, lungs, kidneys, ets. and measure the size of the extremities, look if the ears, eyes, nose and mouth are where they should be. The baby's heartbeat is also checked and also the flow of blood and "food" supply between mother and fetus. I am happy and relieved to say that everything about the baby is okay, she is healthy and even growing up faster than her gestational age.

The specialist found out during the screening that I have an increased amount of amniotic fluid, a medical condition called polyhydramnios, so I had to do more tests to find out what has caused it. Aside from the usual routine checks at my gynecologist, I had to give blood samples to check my sugar levels and also to check for infections.

"Should I be worried?" This is what I asked my gynecologist. She told not to worry too much about it because we are still waiting for the results of the blood tests. And as shown in the special screening, the baby is growing despite the increase in amniotic fluid.

I was informed though of the possible complications of severe cases, one of which is the late positioning of the baby because it has extra room to move in the later stage of the pregnancy. It is also possible to have pre-term labor or have premature birth. Or the baby grows too big. The placenta detaching from the wall of the uterus before giving birth is also possible. An umbilical cord prelapse can also occur in which the umbilical cord falls out of the vagina before the baby. In worst cases, it could lead to stillbirth.

So should I be worried? Thinking about the possible complications, one cannot help but be! But I have a very supportive family and friends who listen to me and my gynecologist and her team are also good and competent so I need not really worry too much. I just have to take of myself, relax as much as possible, take care of my food intake and enjoy this little one growing inside of me. Hopefully, the bloodworks will also turn out well and if not, at least we can take preventive and curative measures and monitor the baby.

How To Beat COVID-19

It has been months now since the COVID-19 virus has spread throughout the world. It has affected the lives of everyone and the global economy. What makes it more difficult is that it is so new and we don't fully understand the virus yet and we need more data in order to come up with an effective treatment or vaccine against it. For the medical and pharmaceutical fields, it is a race against time.

So what can we do as ordinary citizens to beat this virus? Foremost, we must listen to what our health authorities say. If they are saying to stay at home, then by all means, please do so.

The most basic thing to do is to observe proper hygiene and treat everything you touch and person you meet to be infected with the virus.

Observing proper handwashing technique is very important. We all have seen illustrations and even videos on how to properly do it. It is important to thoroughly wash the hands including the wrists with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, rinse and thoroughly dry. Then sanitize hands with a disinfectant like 70% isopropyl alcohol.

Avoid touching your face especially in public places with unwashed hands.

Should you sneeze or cough, use your elbow to cover your mouth.

Wear a mask when going out, especially when going to public places.

Keep a 1,5 - 2 meter distance to the person next to you, especially when in public areas. Avoid physical contact like shaking hands.

Most of all, stay at home when you don't need to go outside to buy groceries or medicines or to see the doctor. This could definitely help save lives.

4 Ways to Improve Skin Aging

As we grow older, our skin may show signs of age. Your diet and overall environment can affect your skin in varying ways. You may want to regain the youthful appearance you once had. Keep reading to learn four ways you can help aging skin look young and vibrant again.

1. Get Enough Sleep
We’ve all heard that getting enough sleep is important for your health, but it’s also important for your skin. Getting at least six to eight hours of sleep can improve your skin. It may also be beneficial to sleep on your back, since your skin may furrow and wrinkle when you sleep on your side.

2. Skin Procedures
Skincare has come a long way and there are many skincare procedures that you can choose from, depending on your needs. One very popular non-invasive skin procedure is microdermabrasion. This is a procedure in which the outer layer of the skin is sloughed away with microcrystals. Non-invasive procedures are gentle enough on the skin that few may require downtime.

3. Anti-Aging Creams
Many anti-aging creams on the market may help to rewind the signs of aging. Retinol, for instance, can help your skin produce more collagen and may make your skin more supple. Increased suppleness and elasticity may help to lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, making you appear younger.

4. Wear Sunscreen
You may have heard how important sunscreen is in the prevention of skin cancer. Wearing sunscreen can also help reduce skin damage. Damage from the sun’s rays can cause your skin to show the signs of aging. Sunscreen with an SPF level of 30 can help protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun.

Growing old gracefully doesn’t have to mean showing your age. Consider using some of the options above in your quest to recapture younger-looking skin.

Why You Should Never Reboil Boiled Water

Technology has made it a lot easier for us to boil water using electric kettles. They come in many different designs, shapes, sizes and material. But like the good old water kettle, it is always advisable to use fresh water when boiling a new one.

Water from the tap naturally contains chemical components, even germs and bacteria. When you boil water, the chemical components undergo a chemical transformation and the germs and bacteria are killed in the process. When you reboil it, the transformed components like nitrates and fluorides for example become more concentrated. The more you reboil, the more concentrated they become and become  significantly toxic. And you don't want this to enter your body. Who does?

Studies have shown that chemical substances such as arsenic, when accumulated in the body can result in a number of health problems like for example cancer, heart disease, even infertility.  Nitrates become carcinogenic when they are converted to nitrosamines. Water naturally contains calcium salts, a high intake of which can lead to health problems including kidney stones, gallstones.

If you are pregnant, better be on the safe side and always use fresh water when preparing your tea.

Consider These 3 Essential Snacks When Arranging a Business Meeting

As someone who arranges business meetings at your workplace, you are responsible not only for scheduling and organization but also in providing the optimal environment for each event. During work, attendees may feel tired or hungry and will need small food that energizes them and make them feel better throughout the gathering and the rest of the workday. Consider bringing these snacks to the next work meeting.

Healthy Foods
The employees will need a high amount of energy to power them through work, especially if the meeting takes place early in the day. Healthy foods ensure that they receive this energy without the side effects of excessive sugar intake, such as bloating and the inevitable energy dip. Consider bringing the following healthful items.

  • Fruits such as bananas, grapes, orange slices, etc.
  • Vegetables like carrots, broccoli, lettuce, etc.
  • Cheese slices including cheddar and mozzarella
  • Whole wheat bread

You can also combine some of these foods into different arrangements, such as salad bars or small sandwiches. Creative presentations can make healthy foods more appealing.

Drinks
Don't forget to accompany snacks with some drinks. Coffee and tea continue to be a favorite for workers, so keep a reasonable supply at hand, as well as a coffee maker, water and other preparation items. People can enjoy the positive benefits of caffeine such as disease prevention and energy boosts when consuming moderate amounts.  Fruit juices like apple and orange bring the same benefits as their bases, while bottled water fulfills daily health requirements.

Desserts
While it is important to keep the office snacks healthy, there is nothing wrong with the occasional sweet treat. The trick is to keep desserts small and full of other nutrients besides just sugar. Bring a generous supply of corporate cookies Atlanta, small cupcakes or other pastries to make the attendees' day more interesting.

Company meetings can feel like a drag at times and lead to distractions and discomfort. Make sure to prepare the right snacks before each meeting to satisfy all involved parties and improve performance and loyalty.

3 Things To Look for in an Elderly Care Facility

It can be a difficult decision to move to or send loved ones to a senior living facility, but it can also be the best decision to ensure proper care. When choosing a facility, make careful considerations about your needs and what the facility has to offer. Below are three elements to consider when selecting an elderly care facility.

The Safety and Care of Its Residents
One of the top concerns when selecting a facility is how well you or your loved one will be cared for and treated. There are steps you can take to find a facility that treats its residents with respect and compassion. Talk to other residents and ask them for honest opinions about their experience; pay attention to their tone and body language to see if they enjoy being there or seem distressed. As you tour the facility, ask a lot of questions to staff and residents alike, and see how well their answers compare. Look for clean and maintained facilities, and pay attention to the hygiene and grooming of the residents. You can also look up a community to see the licensing and any violations it has.

Level of Freedom
Different facilities vary in the freedom and support they offer, and some facilities offer both freedom and support depending on the resident’s needs. Consider the level of freedom wanted and needed to be content, and the level of support needed to be safe and healthy. Search out residential care facility Missouri that can offer the range of freedom and support that will best care for you or your loved one.

Activities and Events
Moving to a new place can feel overwhelming, especially if social connections are further away. When you tour, ask about classes, events and activities offered. If the facility offers them, it provides opportunities for residents to make friends and participate in hobbies, which is good for preventing loneliness.

A residential care facility can be a great option if you are unable to care for yourself or a loved one. Sometimes the best care we can give is to ask for help.

Helping Children Cope with Fear of Dentist

Because dental hygiene is vital to your children’s overall health, they must undergo regular checkups and treatments – even if they’re scared of the dentist. Take steps to assuage their fears and make them more comfortable in the chair to enable the visits to go more successfully and smoothly.

Find a Specialist
Choosing a kids dentist Jacksonville over a regular practitioner may make it easier for children who fear the visits. Not only will these professionals have offices with décor, toys and an atmosphere that caters to kids, but they will also be specially trained to deal with emerging and developing teeth with instruments smaller than the standard equipment. In addition, the entire staff may be taught the right demeanor to deal with children, making the entire experience more soothing.

Play Pretend
Prepare your child for his visit by showing him generally what to expect. Use a toothbrush to count his teeth and give him a mirror to see what the dentist will look at when she examines his teeth. Encourage a bit of excitement by finding children’s books featuring popular television characters that describe what they experienced during their first trip to the dental office.

Don’t Overdo It
When discussing the visit with your child, choose your words carefully. Don’t introduce extra concepts that may increase his fear, such as the potential for getting a shot or drilling to fill a cavity. Don’t comment that the experience won’t hurt if he’s never expressed the fear that it will, for example. Answer his questions with brief, positive statements and assure him that the dentist will help him have teeth that are clean and strong.

Make dental visits more relaxing for your children – and the office staff – by laying the groundwork that can make each trip less stressful. Establishing a trusting and maybe even enjoyable relationship between your kids and their dentist can ensure a lifelong commitment to oral health and safety.

3 Alternatives To Traditional Labor and Delivery in Texas

Pregnancy and birth can be an intimidating process, especially if it's your first time. You may not have considered additions or alternatives to a hospital stay during labor and delivery. Three are some options to optimize your experience.

Some hospitals even offer this, if you don't want to seek out a separate facility. You could also stay at home instead of rushing to a delivery room. Just imagine how much less stress you would feel in the familiarity and privacy of your own home.

Go To a Birthing Center

Things That Cause Air Pollution - Stop These Things To Maintain High Indoor Air Quality

Air quality refers to the purity of air that people breathe. The quality of air is usually at its lowest in big cities that engage in lots of manufacturing. Air quality is also made worse by the exhaust of motor vehicles and the release of harmful gases not related to manufacturing into the atmosphere. Although homes generally have a better air quality than the outdoors, residences still find themselves guilty of harboring not-so-great air.

Smoking tobacco, cannabis, and other substance is bad for air quality
One of the worst parts of tobacco consumption is the process of inhaling smoke - the type of smoke doesn't really matter - into the precious human lungs. Although not as bad as tobacco, cannabis smoke can also be held responsible for reducing the air quality in homes. Other things that put out smoke, such as incense, are also not good for homes' average air quality readings.

Pets are notorious for pumping out lots of hair and dander
Dander refers to tiny particles that dogs, cats, and other pets release into their environments. Many people who have allergies are allergic to cat or dog dander. Even though pets are oh-so-fun to have around, you should be aware of their potential to make the air around your home harder to breathe. One way to reduce the amount of dander in your home's aerial environment is to filter through it with an HVAC filter.

Not having ample ventilation is also a common culprit to blame for low air quality
The point of ventilation is to pump old, stale air out of homes. Residences that don't have enough working equipment to properly ventilate homes, they often suffer from low air quality as a result of their ventilation problems. Check around your home to see if its vents are open, not clogged, and pulling enough air through them. Simply moving debris around is all this step takes to be completed. If you want to start breathing better air, look no further than the help of hvac technician harris county tx, who is great at what he does.

Why Drink Bottled Water?

Water is essential for our health. It is the only beverage that has no calories and no sugar, that while keeping us hydrated. We are always reminded to drink at least two liters of water per day to ensure that our body is well-hydrated, which helps regulate our body temperature and maintain our bodily functions. Wherever we are - at work, home, school or outdoors, bottled water within our reach ensures the availability of this naturally hydrating beverage. Because it is available in a variety of formats (sparkling or still) and sizes, we can choose whatever suits our needs.

Also, bottled water have strict safety and quality standards to follow, ensuring consumers that they get a high quality product. Moreover, the sources of these natural mineral and spring waters are protected to keep it sustainable. The bottled water producers go to great lengths to protect these natural resources and continuously find ways to keep environmental impacts at a minimum.

When calamities or emergencies arise, or when water supply is cut off in a municipality due to contamination or drought for example, bottled water provides a steady and safe supply. It can be easily and readily distributed to these affected areas, ensuring that the populace is kept hydrated.

Water really is life. It is the healthiest drink there is. I just hope that everyone will have access to it. And that we will all be responsible in recycling and disposing of our used water bottles - be it plastic or glass.

Benefits and Risks of Home Replacement Therapy

Hormone replacement therapy is a treatment that is specifically geared towards women who have already gone through menopause. With this type of treatment, the female hormones and estrogen that are no longer produced are replaced through regular medication. Women who experience hot flashes, vaginal dryness and bone loss are often prescribed a hormone replacement therapy course of treatment. While there are a wide range of benefits pertinent to hormone replacement therapy, there are some risks as well.

Systemic hormone therapy comes in the form of a cream, spray, pill, patch or gel. This type of hormone therapy helps the most with night sweats, hot flashes and the discomfort that comes from having vaginal dryness. Systemic therapy utilizes large doses of estrogen. An increase in estrogen can reduce the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis and colon cancer.

Low-dose vaginal estrogen products come in a cream, ring or tablet form. These products offer minimal absorption by the body, and they treat vaginal and urinary-related symptoms associated with menopause. These types of products also help with night sweats, mood swings and hot flashes. If you have not had your uterus removed, your doctor will likely prescribe a course of treatment that combines estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen alone can trigger growth in the uterine lining; this can lead to uterine cancer. Progesterone prevents this from happening.

Hormone replacement therapy for women does have some potential side effects. Many of the possible side effects become a greater issue if you have a family history of certain conditions. If you have a family history of heart disease, certain cancers, blood clots or stroke, you should work with your doctor to determine the best hormone replacement therapy option. Osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and heart disease are potential side effects of hormone replacement therapy. If you have a history of blood clots, liver disease or breast cancer, you should avoid hormone replacement therapy. If you minimize the other medications you take, limit your stress, exercise regularly, eat a healthy and well-balanced diet and visit your doctor regularly, you can greatly minimize many of the side effects of hormone replacement therapy.
